Some of us know the feeling too well: you know exactly what you need to do, and you still can't start. Another app doesn't fix that, it lives inside the phone, right next to everything that pulls you away. What helps is presence. So we imagined STU: a standalone device that sits on your desk and keeps you company while you work, no phone needed.

We published the first STU designs online, and 300 requests poured in. So we built the web app, and Startmate, Australia's leading startup accelerator, backed us through their Winter 2025 cohort. STU was becoming a real company.

We built the first batch of 100 STUs entirely in-house: 3D printers running around the clock, a small crew assembling, testing and packing every single one. They sold out in twelve days. The people who got them, our STU Buddies, have been living with STU every day since, and everything we've learned from them is in the STU you're ordering today.

Photos of STUs on desks started showing up, friends told friends, and more people wanted one than we could ever build by hand. So we opened pre-orders in early-bird batches: first the Supporters, then the Champions. Hundreds of people reserved a STU on trust, before ever seeing one in person, at prices that thanked them for being early.

Finding our factory
William spent six weeks in China visiting factories, testing STU's software on their hardware, and choosing the partner who could build STU properly. By March we had a full production plan: real costs, real timeline, no guesses. Meanwhile STU AI, the web app side of STU, kept shipping and improving every week.

We made our first factory payment and the production build is officially underway: about six months of tooling, molding, testing and assembly, with milestones we'll share openly as we hit them. We're building for the more than 500 people already waiting for their STU.
